St Patrick’s Day (17 March 2015) marked yet another Champions League where Arsenal made an earlier anticipated exit from Europe’s premier competition. After losing in a shock 3-1 home defeat in the first leg of the knockout stages, Arsenal were unable to overturn the deficit in Monaco.
In a match where they dominated 71% and created 17 chances, the Gunners were only able to score two goals – they needed three. Consequently, Arsenal lost 3-3 on away goals, leaving the club with only the FA Cup to realistically play for.
Elsewhere in the yesterday match results, Atlético Madrid were able to live up to their billing as favourites, dispatching Bayer Leverkusen on penalties. Both sides managed to win their home games 1-0 inside of 90 minutes, but extra time and spot kicks were required to determine an ultimate winner. Atlético will need to play better in the next stage.
