For a nation of their footballing heritage, it is surprising for many when they discover Chile have never won the Copa America. Soon, though, that could all change for La Roja after beating Peru 2-1 in their semi-final encounter late on Monday night.
None of the football results from yesterday could compete with the magnitude of 2015 Copa America hosts Chile attempting to make it to the final of the tournament that they are currently hosting.
Chile have played admirably in the knockout stages, realising the importance of winning games rather than always playing free-flowing attacking football. In fact, Chile looked decidedly nervy even after Eduardo Vargas opened the scoring on 42 minutes.
Moving into the second half, Chile then conceded an equaliser when Gary Medel scored a damaging own goal on 60 minutes. Fortunately for the Inter Milan defender, Vargas stepped up again. But this time the Napoli forward scored a scintillating long shot to win the game after 64 minutes.
