Steven Gerrard is no stranger to controversy in this always-heated clash between English football’s most successful teams of all time. And in the football results from yesterday, Gerrard once again hit the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Incredibly, the legendary Liverpool captain was sent off after 43 seconds of coming on in the second half. After a robust challenge against Juan Mata, a Steven Gerrard red card quickly followed when he stamped on the ankle of Man Utd midfielder Ander Herrera.
Gerrard was joining a game in which his team were 1-0 down following a goal from Juan Mata in the first half. Thus, they desperately needed their captain to get them back into the game.
Curiously, Liverpool played better with ten men. They even managed to peg back Man Utd to 2-1 after Daniel Sturridge scored following Mata’s exquisite bicycle kick. But that was not enough, and now Man Utd have a five-point lead in fourth place.
