Chile Kick Off 2015 Copa America with Victory

Copa America hosts Chile kicked off the 2015 competition with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the football results from yesterday. Boasting rare talents like Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal, Chile are aspiring to win their first-ever Copa America, having finished as runners-up on four occasions.

Ahead of the tournament, Chile lacked creativity and scored few goals. And despite retaining 66% of possession, they struggled to create chances against Ecuador. From 10 total attempts, Chile only managed four shots on target.

Chile’s inability to score began to worry fans, who experienced joyous relief when Juventus midfielder Vidal scored a penalty after 67 minutes. After a tense late stretch in the game, Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas sealed three points by adding a second goal after 84 minutes.

By winning their first game, Chile are already in prime position to advance to the knockout stage. Their remaining games will be against Mexico and Bolivia, respectively.
